Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we actually get asked by restaurant operators. For pricing, scheduling and general enquiries, see our general FAQ.
How does temperature monitoring actually save a cooler full of stock?
By telling someone while the food is still good. Cooler and freezer temperatures are watched around the clock and an alert goes out when a unit drifts, so the failure is caught during the drift rather than discovered at open. The value is entirely in the alert reaching a person who can act, which is why the contact list matters as much as the sensor. See managing your alert contacts.
Every shift lead has the same alarm code. Should they?
No. Individual codes make the opening and closing log meaningful and survive staff turnover, which in hospitality is faster than almost any other trade. Codes are added through the customer website rather than the panel for security reasons, and take up to five minutes to reach the devices. See how to add and manage users.
Someone burns something and the smoke alarm goes. What then?
In a kitchen this is not hypothetical. Smart Signal lets you cancel a false alarm from the app rather than waiting on a verification call, and a signal cancelled within 30 seconds is never transmitted at all. Both matter in a room where cooking sets off detectors as a matter of routine. See why an alarm may not reach us.
How long do the smoke and CO detectors last?
Most carry a ten year manufacturer lifespan, but that starts at the factory. A detector we install typically has seven to nine years left on the day it goes up. In a kitchen environment that is worth diarising rather than waiting for the chirp. See the lifespan of your detectors.
Can I see the back door and the till from my phone?
Yes, live and recorded, without a recorder in the back office. Clips can be downloaded in a chosen file format when you need to hand something to an insurer, a franchisor or the police. See changing the download file format.
Can I stop deliveries propping the back door open?
Access control gives you the two things that fix this: a door held or forced generates a real time alert rather than a shrug, and access schedules limit which credentials work at which hours. Neither requires anyone to be watching a screen.
We have more than one site. Is that one system or several?
One. Access, video, intrusion and temperature run through a single dashboard across locations, and users can be added or removed across all of them at once rather than site by site.
Do restaurants get charged for false alarms like homes do?
Yes, and often on shorter permit terms. Garden Grove issues business alarm permits for one calendar year against three years for a residence, so the renewal comes round three times as often and an expired permit removes your free allowance completely. Check your city page for the local rules.
Who responds at two in the morning?
We do not provide guards ourselves, but the monitoring station can dispatch a private guard, a patrol operator, a response service or the police in whatever order you specify. For a closed restaurant that order is worth deciding deliberately. See guard and alarm response services.
Can you take over the system the last operator left behind?
Usually not. Genuine takeovers are rare and normally only straightforward on systems we installed ourselves, and we get this call almost daily. Someone has to look at what is actually on the wall before anyone can answer honestly. See monitoring an existing or third party system.
