PERMITS

Compton requires an annual alarm permit

Under Municipal Code Section 9-20.2, every alarm user must get an annual Alarm User’s Permit before installing and using an alarm system.

Applications are filed with the City Treasurer’s Office (Section 9-20.3). The code sets these fees:

  • Residential: $25 filing and processing fee, then $15 to renew each year
  • Commercial: $50 filing and processing fee, then $40 to renew each year

Permits are valid for one year from the date they are issued. Installing or operating a burglary or robbery alarm without a valid permit is an infraction with a $100 fine (Section 9-20.8). Fees can change, so confirm the current amounts with the city when you apply.

FALSE ALARMS

Three false alarms, then fees

An alarm with more than three false alarms in a 12-month period is treated as an excessive user (Section 9-20.7).

After the third false alarm, the Chief of Police notifies the user of the false alarm rules and fee schedule. The code’s fee schedule is:

  • 4th false alarm: $50
  • 5th false alarm: $100
  • 6th false alarm: $150

A fee must be paid to the City Treasurer’s Office, and the user must tell the Chief of Police in writing that the system has been inspected and repaired by a certified alarm company. Permits are revoked after more than six false alarms in 12 months, or when false alarm fees are delinquent. A user can reapply after a 30-day waiting period once fees are paid and the problem is fixed.

Repairs. Our own technicians can inspect and repair a system and give you the paperwork the code asks for.
