Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we actually get asked about monitoring, signalling and dispatch. For pricing, scheduling and general enquiries, see our general FAQ.
Who actually watches the signal?
We do. Epic Alarm is one of the few security companies in the country that owns and operates its own UL listed central monitoring station, so the people who answer your alarm work for the company that installed your system rather than for a contractor several steps removed from you.
Does the system need a phone line?
No. Every system we install includes a dedicated cellular connection at no extra cost, on all of them, not as an upgrade. Phone line signalling belongs to an era we left behind, and it was the weakness that made the old cut-the-line attack work. See do you do cellular radio for alarm installs.
What information do you give the police about me?
Your address, phone numbers, user list and emails stay inside our system. The monitoring team shares information with police dispatch in the event of a break-in or another emergency, and under no other circumstances. Separately, many cities require you to register your alarm with them directly, which is a different thing entirely. See do you share information with the police and your city page. We provide alarm monitoring in Santa Ana and across Orange County. If you’re in Tustin, note that the city runs a calendar-year alarm permit that isn’t prorated.
My alarm went off but nobody called me.
Usually because the signal never left the building. We follow the SIA standard for false alarm reduction, under which a signal cancelled within 30 seconds is never transmitted. Disarm quickly after an accidental trip and you will hear the siren but no alarm is sent. If you doubt the system is communicating, call us, and test monthly regardless. See my alarm went off but nobody called.
What is an abort code and why do you insist on one?
It is the word or phrase that proves who you are when we call to verify an alarm. Before we cancel a dispatch or discuss the account, we ask for it. Without one, anyone standing in your house could call the police off. See what an abort code is.
Do you send a guard rather than the police?
We do not provide guard or physical response services ourselves. What we can do is programme the monitoring station to dispatch a private guard, a patrol operator, a response service or the police, in whatever order you want. That sequence is customisable rather than fixed, which is unusual. See guard and alarm response services.
Can you just monitor the system I already have?
Usually not, and we would rather say so plainly than take your money and disappoint you. Simple takeovers are rare and are normally only straightforward on systems we installed ourselves. We get calls about this almost daily from people unhappy with another provider, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what is on your wall. See monitoring an existing or third party system.
Will monitoring reduce my insurance premium?
It often does, and insurers usually want proof rather than your word. We can issue a certificate of protection that documents the monitored system for your insurer. Whether it produces a discount, and how much, is between you and them. See the certificate of protection programme.
Who gets notified, and can I change that?
Yes, and you should keep it current. The alert contact list is yours to manage, and the range of notification types is wider than most people set up when the system goes in. A keyholder who moved away three years ago is a real problem in several Orange County cities, where failing to attend the premises when asked is itself grounds for losing police response. See managing your alert contacts and the types of notifications available.
What does a communication error mean, and how do I test it?
It means the panel is having trouble reaching us, which is exactly the fault you want to know about before you need the system. You can run a cell unit test yourself to confirm the path is working rather than assuming it. See communication errors and how to perform a cell unit test.
