Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we actually get asked about home alarm systems. For pricing, scheduling and general enquiries, see our general FAQ.
What is an abort code, and why do you ask for one?
It is a word, number or short phrase that proves who you are when our monitoring centre calls. When an alarm comes in we ring to verify it, and before we cancel a dispatch or discuss your account we ask for that code. It is what stops whoever happens to be standing in your house from calling the police off. Full detail in what an abort code is and why we require one.
My alarm went off but nobody called me. What happened?
Most often the signal never left the building. Our systems and monitoring service follow the SIA standard for false alarm reduction, under which a signal cancelled within 30 seconds is never transmitted to the monitoring station. Open a side door to let the dog out with the system armed, disarm at the panel a few seconds later, and you hear the siren but no alarm is ever sent. If you have any doubt the system is communicating, call us, and test the system monthly either way. See my alarm went off but nobody called.
What is Crash and Smash protection?
Your panel gives you an entry delay to type your code, and there is a further industry standard delay before it transmits. An intruder who destroys the panel inside that window stops the signal ever leaving, which was a real weakness on panels connected only by a phone line. Crash and Smash is a patented Alarm.com feature that recognises the panel has been disabled during that window and reports the alarm anyway. More in what Crash and Smash is.
What are entry and exit delays, and why do they matter?
The exit delay is how long you have to leave after arming. The entry delay is how long you have to reach the panel and disarm after opening a monitored door. Set them badly and ordinary life trips the alarm: someone home early, a cleaner, a relative with a key. Most Orange County cities allow only a small number of false alarms before they start costing money, so we set these around how your household actually moves rather than to a factory default. The rules vary by city. Garden Grove’s alarm rules allow two false alarms in any twelve months before fees begin, while Santa Ana’s measure the twelve months backwards from your last false alarm. See entry and exit delays, and your city page for the local rules.
Can I arm the system with a window open?
Yes. Bypassing tells the panel to ignore one sensor for that arming period only, so the rest of the system still protects the property. It resets the next time you arm, which is rather the point: a bypass is meant to be temporary, not a way of living with a sensor that needs attention. How to bypass zones when arming walks through it.
The panel is showing a power warning or a low battery. What should I do?
A plug symbol with a red cross means the panel is not receiving mains power. Check it is still plugged in, then test the outlet with a lamp or something else you know works. Once power is restored the red cross disappears and the panel recharges its backup battery on its own, which can take up to eight hours depending on how long it was out. If it persists, call us. Power loss or low battery warning has the steps.
What does “loss of sensor supervision” mean?
The panel has stopped being able to see one of its sensors. It is usually one of three things: the sensor battery has finally died, often after weeks of low battery warnings; the sensor physically left the building, which happens more than you would think when windows or doors are replaced and the old ones are carted off with the sensors still attached; or the device has simply reached the end of its life. We can normally troubleshoot it remotely. See what loss of sensor supervision means.
Can I paint my sensors?
It depends on the sensor, and painting any of them voids the manufacturer warranty. Plenty of customers have painted door and window contacts with no ill effect, though we advise against metallic paint. The thin plastic lens on the front of a motion sensor should never be painted, glass break sensors need their openings left clear, and heat and smoke detectors should not be painted at all. Can I paint my sensors covers each type.
How do I give a cleaner or a dog walker their own code?
Through the customer website rather than the panel, and that is deliberate: for security reasons user codes can only be added online. You choose which devices each user can reach, and you can generate a random code instead of picking one. Allow up to five minutes for a new code to reach the devices before you test it. How to add and manage users has the steps.
How long is the system under warranty?
As a general guide, alarm systems carry twelve months on parts and twelve months on labour, and camera systems three years on parts with six months on labour. An optional extended service plan is available as well. Your own agreement is the authority, so check that if you are unsure. See how long your system is under warranty.
