Can door and window contacts be concealed?
Yes, and in a residential care setting it is usually the right call. A concealed contact sits inside the door or frame rather than on the surface, so there is nothing to pick at, pull off or work loose. Surface contacts in a home where someone is determined to test them become a maintenance job and then a gap in the protection. We fit concealed contacts as a matter of course where the setting calls for it.
What about delayed egress on exit doors?
Tell us what your licence and your fire authority require and we will design to it rather than around it. Delayed egress is governed by the fire authority rather than by us, and the requirements differ by facility type and occupancy, so it is not something to specify from a brochure. Bring us the condition you have been given and we will tell you plainly what we can and cannot do within it.
We run several homes. Is that several systems to manage?
It does not have to be. Access, video, intrusion and environmental monitoring can run through one dashboard across locations, with users added or removed across every site at once rather than house by house. For an operator with staff who move between homes, that is the difference between administration you can keep on top of and administration you cannot.
One of our sites has no usable broadband. Is it a lost cause?
No. Alarm signalling does not depend on the site broadband in the first place, because every system we install includes a dedicated cellular connection at no extra cost. Where a site also needs a real internet connection for cameras or remote access and the usual providers cannot deliver one, satellite links are a solution we have installed and will happily discuss. Staff turnover is high. How do we keep codes under control?
Individual codes rather than a shared one, managed centrally. Codes are added through the customer website rather than the panel for security reasons, you choose which devices each person reaches, you can generate a random code instead of picking one, and it takes up to five minutes for a new code to reach the devices. A single shared code that outlives every leaver is the thing to remove first. See how to add and manage users.
Can staff carry a panic button?
Yes. It is a wireless button that sends an emergency signal whether the security system is armed or disarmed, so it works during the working day rather than only overnight. It can be worn on a lanyard, a wristband, a belt clip or a visor clip, or wall mounted in a fixed location. It is water resistant, and it has a five second lockout so a knock does not fire three signals. Who should know the abort code when the team rotates?
Fewer people than you think, and the list needs maintaining. The abort code is what proves identity when our monitoring centre calls to verify an alarm, and we ask for it before cancelling a dispatch. In a setting with shift work and agency cover, that code drifts into general knowledge unless someone owns it. Review it when the staffing changes, not when something happens. Where should cameras go in a building people live in?
Entrances, corridors, offices, medication storage and other staff or shared areas. Not bedrooms, not bathrooms, not anywhere a resident has a reasonable expectation of privacy. We will design to that line and we will say so if a request crosses it. A camera that makes a resident feel watched in their own home is a problem you will be living with long after the install.
Do false alarms cost more when we run several sites?
They can, because each address is counted separately and permits are issued per address rather than per organisation. Business permit terms are also often shorter than residential ones: Garden Grove, for example, issues business permits for one calendar year against three for a residence. Multiply that renewal across a portfolio and a lapsed permit somewhere becomes likely rather than possible. Check the city page for each location.
How long do the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors last?
Most carry a ten year manufacturer lifespan, but that starts at the factory. A device we install typically has seven to nine years of it left on the day it goes up.
